Fear: Common Human Emotion

What is fear? Fear is an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by expectation or awareness of danger. Although fear is a common human emotion, our response to it varies. Some cry, freeze and unable to think, and others just run away until they feel safe. People fear many things, even the smallest things that we may think they’re ridiculous. Personally, my fear is one that is feared by many Americans and other countries as well.

My fear is another terrorist attack in New York City, mainly an attack on the Port Authority Bus Terminal and on the subway lines. This is a big issue for me involving fear because I’m always in the city due to the fact that I’m in a running club as well as being a runner for Nike. Traveling, I don’t know what might happen. Some crazy guy might come out of nowhere and detonate explosives like the incident that happened in Madrid, Spain in 2004.

Since the 9/11 attacks, the world has been living in fear. We no longer feel safe going on planes or even visiting large cities. We fear all different kinds of people now and as a result, we have war. I, myself had an experience dealing with this. I was coming home from training and I came across a group of people questioning on a bag that was left behind. Minutes later, the authorities came to take care of the situation. Turns out, someone really did leave a bag behind by accident. I was relieved to know that it wasn’t something serious. But I was still scared to know what could’ve happened if the bag really did have explosives in them.

As for a lesson learned from coming across this situation, I don’t think there is one. It’s just a matter of a 50/50 chance or having to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. For a global lesson learned, airports have tightened their security; you have to carry I.D.’s if you want to travel, and the idea of the government not trusting any organization or anyone.
