First, is the network cable plugged in? (physical layer)



Does the computer in question have a valid IP address?



Can the default gateway be successfully pinged? (testing LAN IP connectivity)



Looking at the NIC and/or the switch, is the link light on?(data-link)



Is there valid DNS server information?



Can the DNS server be successfully pinged? (testing IP connectivity)



Is there a firewall in the network? If so, is the firewall correctly configured? (network layer on up to application)



Do you know the format of the file? Do you have a program installed which can view the file? (presentation layer)



Try browsing a different web site. Can your browser open a different website?
